Western Maryland Railway (1852–1983) “The Fast Freight Line” operated in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Primarily a coal hauling and freight railroad with a small passenger train operation. The railroad, built through rough, but gorgeous, topography operating a main line featuring numerous tunnels and bridges. After the railroad became part of Chessie System large segments were abandoned during the 1970s and 1980s. The Western Maryland was the first Chessie road to disappear, merged into the B&O on May 1, 1983.
