Boot Hill Saloon is right across from Pinewood Cemetery. The landmark biker bar reminds its patrons of the cemetery with its famous slogan, “Better off here than across the street.” The bar took its name from the Old West, where cemeteries were often called “boot hills” because the old boots would sit atop the cowboy graves. Thus, the Boot Hill Saloon was born. Pinewood Cemetery suffered from mismanagement, neglect and the ravages of time. An effort to save the cemetery started in the late 1990s. Fund-raisers during Bike Week and Biketoberfest have raised thousands toward some $90,000 in renovations to the cemetery.
